5th Annual Health Fair
The Kenosha Community Healthcare Initiative Holds it 5th Annual Health Fair on March 21st at the Madrigrano Center
The fifth annual Kenosha Community Healthcare Initiative (KCIHI) Health and Screening Fair will be held on Saturday March 21st from 7:30AM to noon at the Madrigrano Center, Gateway Technical College (3520 30th Ave, Kenosha). Admission is free to the fair and we will be selling raffle tickets and door prizes.
“Over the past four years numerous participants have discovered potentially life-threatening ailments and were able to seek further life saving care.” stated Julianna Olson, NP the Co-Chair of KCHI. Jim Larson was one of those participants. Jim, a recently retired, slender, physically fit man never thought there was anything wrong that a good golf game couldn’t cure. While he was attending the KCHI Health Fair with friends he decided to join the line to get a carotid artery scan “just for giggles.” Well he soon found out that he had a large amount of build up in his carotid arteries that put him at extremely high risk for stroke. “That’s the way it is with many diseases. Unless you get your health screenings you don’t know anything’s wrong until it’s too late.” said Ms. Olson. Jim had immediate follow up with a cardiologist and was in for life saving surgery within 48 hrs. “I was back on the golf course in a week or so like nothing ever happened. Who knew?” said Jim.
The many vendors offer a variety of health related screening activities such as Carotid Artery Scans with Dr. Stone and an “Ask The Doctor” booth by Kenosha United Hospital System, Bone Density Screening by Kenosha Open MRI, Chair Massages by Kenosha YMCA, Blood Pressure, vision, spinal, podiatry, balance screening and much more.
In addition to the free KCHI Health Fair, Wellness Inc. is offering complete confidential Health Risk Assessments (HRA) to include a simple blood test that looks at 35 different items in order to detect diseases such as diabetes, anemia, heart, liver and kidney disease for just $75 (a $400 value if you were to have it done anywhere else). Individuals will receive their results along with information on what each test result means for their current and future health as well as personally tailored recommendations from health care professionals on ways to correct or prevent disease. Employers are welcome to sponsor the cost on behalf of their employees. Many companies who do not have the ability to perform HRA’s with biometrics have registered with Wellness Inc to offer their employees this complete service. In turn the companies are provided with a summary of target wellness initiatives that can help their employees be and stay healthy. Don Gillespie, President of the AM Community Credit Union said, “The collaboration with the screening fair sponsored by KCHI is a cost effective way for A M Community to include a comprehensive medical screening and health risk assessment into our wellness program. We have required participation for the past three years and I am confident that the chronic and catastrophic healthcare costs we've avoided through the screening process have more than covered the nominal fee. The HRA and testing done with Wellness Inc is by registration through 1866-935-5462 and will be offered on March 19th at the YMCA, March 20th at the RecPlex 6:00am to 10:00am and during the KCHI Health Fair on March 21st from 7:00am to noon.

Wisconsin cigarette sales take hit
Wisconsin cigarette sales take hit
Tax increase boosts state's revenue
By Amy Olson • Wausau Daily Herald • July 24, 2008
Cigarette sales have decreased this year statewide in the wake of a $1-a-pack tax increase, but that tax is responsible for an increase in state revenue.
Early estimates indicate the state has collected an additional $152.5 million for the first five months of the calendar year since per-pack taxes increased Jan. 1 from 77 cents to $1.77.
"We're running close to (what we) expected," said Faith Russell, a fiscal analyst at the Legislative Fiscal Bureau. The totals are somewhat preliminary because taxes collected one month might not be submitted until the following month. Revenues collected go into the state's general fund and already are accounted for in the state's spending plan.
While money collected from the cigarette and other tobacco product taxes has increased, sales appear to be down between 11 percent and 25 percent, Russell said. It will be difficult to assess just how much they've declined and correlate that with the tax increase until the state obtains a full year of sales data. Factors such as the number of weekends in a month can boost or reduce sales, Russell said.
It's hard to tell whether people are smoking less or are purchasing cigarettes online to avoid paying the tax, Russell said. Area retailers said sales of tobacco products have remained flat or dropped. Cigarette sales are down about 12 percent so far this year at Wausau-area R-Stores, said Jim Kemerling, president of Riiser Energy. The company continually looks for other products to meet customers' needs and counter declining profits from gasoline and tobacco sales, Kemerling said.
Those who do purchase cigarettes either purchase fewer nontobacco-related items or purchase lower-priced brands, said Paul Hansen, retail category manager at Riiser Energy.
"Say someone would come in with $20 and buy three packs of cigarettes and a 12-pack of beer," Hansen said. "Now, they might be buying three packs of cigarettes and a six-pack. It hurts all the way around."
Cigarette sales at Kwik Trip's 250 stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa have remained flat, said John McHugh, manager of corporate communications for Kwik Trip Inc. The chain is expanding other product lines to meet customers' needs and to remain profitable.
